Macboatmaster Trusted Advisor. Nope maybe it's my external hard drives????? You get my point, there seems to be no clear reason for the hangs.

I actually know something about computers and have resolved these type of issues in the pass, but this has me totally baffled. I need to get some work done however I have reach the point where I do not trust the machine and I am seeking some insight as to the possible root problem. Replies By default Vista goes into "Sleep" mode when you click the red power button in the start menu. It does not "Shut down". Check out the post below. Also you can use msconfig to troubleshoot if you think it's a program causing the issue. Thanks for your response. I had already set the power option to shutdown computer. I actually have shut down all the services via msconfig and then reinvoked them one by one and could not find a specific program that was causing the shut down hang.

Are you doing Offline files or profile redirection? I have a Win 7 laptop in my environment that exhibits this behavior. I actually uninstalled SEP because that was my first thought too, but it still didn't help. I disabled all of the startup items to no avail and actually tried most of what you mention in your OP too. I plan on getting a new image of the existing system and performing a clean install to see if it happens after a profile migration.

Not an optimal solution, but that's where I ended up. I assume you'll have no problem there. Then I'd try a new profile. Most likely Vista has sent a shutdown command to a device or app or network resource and isn't getting a reply back. Sadly, upgrading is not an option at the moment, so we're stuck trying to fix the problem. I think we may have tried removing SEP entirely on a test system with no positive change, but I don't see that we logged having tried that, so we'll possibly need to revisit that just to confirm.

I can get this to happen on any of our Vista machines under any profile I try, so I feel like I can safely rule out the profile at this point. The safe mode approach and working slowly from there was going to be my next attempt. It doesn't happen every time, though, which makes this a little more challenging. I'm also beginning to suspect that the system must be on for some minimum period of time before this happens.

From an application standpoint, the only common end-user applications would be Lotus Notes 8. I can get it to lock up without ever starting Notes. I got rid of the free Trend Micro stuff early on because of problems. However, my laptops still hang on shutdown about half the time. Once, I left one in shutdown mode for almost two hours to no avail.

That works well and I never get the "unexpected shutdown" message. I don't know if it's a Vista or a Dell problem. Either way, it's pretty common. Pulling the cord out is not a good thing to do brcause of power surges if the prongs spark when coming out.

Does it shut down when you hold in the power button for 5 seconds? Well, I always read that it's much better to pull the connector from the laptop than to pull the cord from the wall. The cord has to be detached at sometime anyway. The machine is literally dead in the water. That "Shutting Down" screen is still displayed and the power light is. I'm used to this so its no longer a big deal. I have met other Dell users with this problem as well we are a.

Dell shop here at the college and it's always a laptop problem.
